Two weeks after iOS 27 reached the public, Apple shipped its first follow-up on Monday, September 28\. iOS 27.0.1 (build 24A446) goes after the bug that has dominated iPhone 18 Pro conversation since launch week: phones freezing and rebooting when Face ID fails to recognize their owner. Apple had told reporters a software fix was coming, and this is it.

The update carries two more fixes worth knowing about. A small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units could produce a color artifact in 2x photos shot at f/1.48, and a gesture bug on every iOS 27 iPhone could lock up the touchscreen if Notification Center and Control Center were opened at the same time. That last one had quietly turned into a social media prank.

Apple released a full slate alongside it: iPadOS 27.0.1, macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, visionOS 27.0.1, and a wider rollout of watchOS 27.0.1\. For devices still on last year's software, iOS 26.7.1, macOS Tahoe 26.7.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 patch a CoreGraphics vulnerability Apple says may have been exploited in targeted attacks. tvOS did not receive an update this round. Here's everything in each release and what to do if you were affected.

### How to Download iOS 27.0.1

iOS 27.0.1 is available now for every iPhone that runs iOS 27, which means iPhone 11 and later.

1. Open **Settings**
2. Tap **General → Software Update**
3. Tap **Update Now** (or **Download and Install**)

Keep your phone on Wi‑Fi and above 50 percent battery, or plugged in, while it installs. If you don't see the update right away, check back in a few hours, since Apple staggers rollouts. You can confirm your version under **Settings → General → About**.

### iOS 27.0.1 (Build 24A446)

Apple's release notes list three specific fixes. They describe the update as bug fixes "including" those issues, so smaller unlisted changes are likely too. Two of the named fixes apply only to iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The third applies to every iPhone on iOS 27.

#### Face ID Failures No Longer Restart iPhone 18 Pro

The headline fix addresses iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units that would unexpectedly restart when Face ID failed to authenticate. Reports started within about a day of the phones going on sale. Owners described Face ID failing on routine tasks like opening a locked app, followed by the phone freezing and rebooting. Others saw a "Face ID is Not Available" message during setup, and some reported trouble with the Require Attention for Face ID setting.

Several owners swapped their phones through Apple Support, only to see the problem return on the replacement. That pointed to software rather than a bad unit, and Apple confirmed last week that a software update would resolve it. The iPhone 18 Pro models are the first to place Face ID's infrared camera beneath the display, though Apple hasn't said whether that hardware change played any role.

If Face ID still misbehaves after updating, reset it and enroll your face again:

1. Go to **Settings → Face ID & Passcode** and enter your passcode
2. Tap **Reset Face ID**
3. Tap **Set Up Face ID** and follow the prompts

While you're there, check that **Require Attention for Face ID** is set the way you want it. Early forum reports suggest a few owners still see setup errors while wearing glasses. If enrollment fails, try completing setup without them, then use **Set Up an Alternate Appearance** to add a look with glasses on.

For anyone who has been living with random reboots since launch, this is the fix that makes the phone dependable again.

#### 2x Photo Color Artifact Fixed on Some iPhone 18 Pro Units

Apple also fixed a camera issue where a color artifact could appear in photos captured at 2x under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48\. The release notes say it affected a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max devices. The f/1.48 detail ties it to the widest setting of the main camera's new variable aperture.

There's nothing to toggle here. Update, and the camera pipeline handles the rest. Apple hasn't said whether the fix touches photos you already took. If you shot a lot at 2x in the past two weeks, scroll back through your library and look for odd color casts in those images. If a specific shot matters, a retake after updating is the safest bet.

#### Touchscreen Freeze From Notification Center and Control Center

The third fix applies to all iPhones running iOS 27\. Opening Notification Center and Control Center simultaneously could leave the touchscreen partially or fully unresponsive until the phone was restarted. Triggering it took a deliberate, well timed pair of swipes, so few people hit it by accident. That didn't stop it from spreading on social media as a supposed trick to "unlock a hidden feature," which left a lot of people with frozen screens.

If your screen locks up like this before you've updated, a force restart clears it:

1. Press and release **volume up**
2. Press and release **volume down**
3. Press and hold the **side button** until the Apple logo appears

After you update to 27.0.1, the gesture combination no longer freezes the display.

#### No Published Security Fixes in iOS 27.0.1

Apple's security releases page lists no published CVE entries for iOS 27.0.1, so this update is about stability rather than security patches. Apple said the CoreGraphics flaw it patched Monday affected versions before iOS 27, which means iPhones already on iOS 27 were not exposed. If you're on iOS 27, update for the bug fixes. If you're still on iOS 26, the 26.7.1 update covered below matters more.

### iPadOS 27.0.1 (Build 24A446)

iPadOS 27.0.1 shares its build number with iOS 27.0.1\. Apple's release notes say only that it provides bug fixes for your iPad, and the security page lists no CVE entries. To update, go to **Settings → General → Software Update**.

### macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1 (Build 26A434)

The first update to macOS Golden Gate is a bug fix release, and Apple hasn't itemized what changed. Like iOS 27.0.1, it has no published CVE entries. Install it from **System Settings → General → Software Update**.

### watchOS 27.0.1 (Build 24R365)

watchOS 27.0.1 isn't technically new. Apple first released it on September 23 only for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, fixing an issue where those models could restart unexpectedly. On Monday, Apple expanded the same build to every other watch that runs watchOS 27: Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3\. The release notes are unchanged. If you already updated a Series 12 or Ultra 4, there's nothing new to install.

To update, open the **Watch** app on your iPhone and go to **General → Software Update**, or on the watch go to **Settings → General → Software Update**. The watch needs to be on its charger and at least 50 percent charged.

### visionOS 27.0.1 (Build 24M372)

Apple Vision Pro owners also have a bug fix update, with no published CVE entries and no detailed notes. Install it from **Settings → General → Software Update** on the headset. You can take Vision Pro off while it installs.

### iOS and iPadOS 26.7.1 (Build 23H30)

If you haven't moved to iOS 27 yet, this is the update to install today. iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 fix a single vulnerability in CoreGraphics, the framework iOS uses to render images and documents. According to Apple, processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is also aware of a report that the flaw may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27.

The issue is tracked as CVE-2026-86950 and was reported by Meta Product Security. Apple describes it as an out of bounds write fixed with improved bounds checking.

Language like "specific targeted individuals" usually points to mercenary spyware aimed at journalists, activists, and officials rather than broad attacks. Your personal risk is likely low, but an actively exploited flaw is a good reason not to wait. To stay on iOS 26, go to **Settings → General → Software Update** and choose the iOS 26.7.1 option below the iOS 27 upgrade prompt.

### macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 (Build 25G241) and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 (Build 24H32)

Mac users who haven't upgraded to Golden Gate get the same CoreGraphics fix. Both updates arrived after two rounds of release candidates, and both patch CVE-2026-86950\. Install them from **System Settings → General → Software Update**, picking the Tahoe or Sequoia update rather than the Golden Gate upgrade if you want to stay put.
