For years, choosing between the regular Apple Watch and the Ultra meant deciding how much health tracking you wanted. This year that isn't the question anymore. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 share the same S11 chip, the same new Health Sensing System and the same Readiness score. So what does the Ultra's extra $400 actually buy?

Mostly time, toughness and a way to reach help where there's no cell service. I've worn the Ultra 4 every day since launch, and the differences that matter are easier to see in daily life than on Apple's spec pages. Here's how the two compare and who each one is for.

## The short answer

Buy the **Series 12** if you want Apple's newest health features in a lighter, slimmer watch and you already charge it most nights. Buy the **Ultra 4** if battery life has ever frustrated you, you hike, dive or travel off the grid, or you want the biggest and brightest screen Apple makes.

## The health features are identical

This is the most important thing to understand before you spend a dollar. Both watches use Apple's new Health Sensing System, with redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors that measure your heart rate every five seconds, all day, without you starting a workout. Both capture heart rate variability up to 24 times more often than before, add recovery HRV to overnight vitals, and introduce a daytime vitals view that can show changes before they appear overnight. Both have ECG, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications and hypertension notifications.

Both also get Readiness, a daily score from 0 to 10 with a recommendation to Recover, Pace Yourself, get Ready, or Go For It, based on your activity, training load, vitals and sleep. It's the feature I check every morning now, and it has genuinely changed how I plan my days. Give it about a week of sleep data before it shows a score. Paying for the Ultra doesn't get you a better health watch. It gets you the same health watch with a much longer leash.

One caveat applies to both. The redesigned Health app Apple showed alongside these watches, with its Longevity tab, Health Age and lab booking, arrives separately later this year, starting in US English. We dug into what we found in [the iOS 27.2 beta](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/inside-apples-redesigned-health-app-everything-we-found-in-the-ios-27-2-beta/), but buy either watch for what it does today, not for features that haven't shipped.

## Battery life is the biggest difference

The Series 12 is rated for up to 24 hours of normal use, up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 10 hours of outdoor workout tracking. A 15 minute charge adds up to 12 hours.

The Ultra 4 is rated for up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. Workout tracking runs up to 18 hours, up to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode with full GPS and heart rate, and up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode. A 15 minute charge adds up to 18 hours.

On my wrist, the Ultra 4 beats its rating. I routinely get two and a half days between charges, and in one stretch it went 41 hours off the charger and still had 57 percent left. That changes how you use a watch. Sleep tracking stops being something you plan around, a weekend away doesn't need a charger, and you stop doing battery math before a long run. If you charge your watch every night already and like that routine, the Series 12's full day is enough. If you've ever lost a night of sleep data because the watch was on the charger, the Ultra fixes that.

## Display, size and comfort

The Ultra 4 comes in one size, a 49mm titanium case with a flat sapphire crystal and a display that peaks at 3,000 nits, which makes a real difference in direct sun. It weighs about 63 grams and is 12mm thick. The Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm, is 9.7mm thick in aluminum and titanium, peaks at 2,000 nits, and weighs from about 32 grams for the 42mm aluminum model to about 53 grams for the 46mm ceramic.

That makes the Series 12 the better choice for smaller wrists, for sleeping with something light on your arm, and for sliding under a shirt cuff. The Ultra is big, and there's still no smaller Ultra. Try one on before you assume it will fit.

## Durability, safety and the outdoors

This is where the Ultra earns its name. It's water resistant to 100 meters and rated for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible app, with a depth gauge and water temperature sensor built in. The Series 12 is water resistant to 50 meters, which covers swimming and snorkeling, with a depth gauge to 6 meters.

The Ultra 4 also adds the customizable Action button, a built in emergency siren, precision dual frequency GPS for better accuracy among tall buildings and on trails, and satellite communications. Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My via satellite let you reach help or share your location where there's no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, and Apple includes them free for two years after activation. Messages and Find My via satellite need a carrier plan. The Series 12 has none of these, though a GPS + Cellular Series 12 can still call for help anywhere there's a signal.

## Price and models

The Series 12 starts at $399 for the 42mm aluminum GPS model and $449 for the 46mm. Cellular adds $100 to either size, and titanium and ceramic models, which include cellular, start at $699 and $899\. The Ultra 4 starts at $799 in natural or black titanium with cellular built in. Both lines kept last year's prices.

That pricing creates an interesting middle ground. A titanium Series 12 costs $699, just $100 less than the Ultra 4\. If titanium is what's drawing you in, compare those two directly. You'd be choosing between a slimmer, dressier watch and one with roughly twice the battery life.

## Which one should you buy?

**Get the Series 12 if** you want the full set of new health features at the lowest price, you prefer a smaller or lighter watch, or you already charge your watch every night. The 42mm aluminum GPS model at $399 is the right starting point for most people, and it's the Apple Watch we recommend in [our Gear Guide](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/gear/#the-devices).

**Get the Ultra 4 if** battery life has ever annoyed you, you hike, dive, run long distances or travel where coverage is thin, or you simply want the biggest and brightest screen. For me it's the best Apple Watch Apple has made, mostly because I've stopped thinking about the battery.

**Already wearing a recent Apple Watch?** Ultra 3 owners can skip the Ultra 4, since the design and display are unchanged. If you're on an Ultra 2, an original Ultra, or a Series 9 or older, the new sensors and the battery gains add up to a meaningful upgrade. Keep in mind that some of what's new comes with watchOS 27 rather than new hardware, like the Siri Modular watch face, so a Series 9 or later picks those up for free.

## Bands and charging

Bands made for Apple's 42mm and 46mm cases fit the matching Series 12 sizes, and every 49mm Ultra band fits the Ultra 4\. If you want one stand that tops up your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch overnight, our [charging picks](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/gear/#charging) include the ones we use every day.

Apple made this decision easier this year by giving both watches the same health hardware. Decide how long you need a charge to last and how hard you are on your gear, and the right watch becomes obvious. The health story Apple is building is the same on either wrist.
