- Description: iPhone Duo sold out within minutes of preorders opening, and new orders now ship January 25. What that says about supply, demand and how to still get one.

At 8:00 a.m. Eastern this morning, Apple opened preorders for iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. By the time most of the West Coast was awake, there was nothing left to order for launch day. Within minutes, delivery estimates on Apple's US store slid from October 23 to mid November, then to late November. By 8:30 a.m. Eastern, every configuration, from the $1,999 256GB model to the $3,199 2TB model, showed the same estimate: January 25\. Some buyers saw January 29.

It's tempting to read that as a verdict. A $2,000 phone in a category most people have never bought into, gone in half an hour, with Apple shares up 1.8 percent in premarket trading. But a sellout is a ratio, and Apple only told us one half of it.

## A sellout tells you about supply first

Apple doesn't say how many iPhone Duos it had ready for day one, and it never does. With a normal iPhone, a slipping ship date is a decent proxy for demand because supply is enormous and well understood. Duo breaks that math. This is the most expensive and most mechanically complicated iPhone Apple has ever built: a hinge and a folding 7.6-inch display wrapped around the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reporting heading into launch, including Nikkei Asia's, consistently described a production ramp far slower than a typical iPhone.

So "sold out in minutes" can mean two very different things. It can mean demand is far larger than anyone planned for. It can also mean Apple shipped a small first batch and is letting the backorder do the marketing. The honest answer today is probably some of both, and nobody outside Cupertino can say how much of each.

What the January date does tell us is the size of the gap. Apple pushed the estimate out a full three months in under an hour, which means the next several weeks of production are already spoken for. That isn't a launch day hiccup. That's the entire holiday season.

## The aftermarket already set a price

The other number that showed up this morning came from eBay. Within hours, preorders were listed and marked sold well above retail. According to listings Dexerto tracked, 256GB models that retail for $1,999 sold between $2,699 and $3,800, and a 2TB model went for $4,999.99, roughly $1,800 over Apple's price. 9to5Mac spotted asking prices as high as $5,200.

Treat those numbers carefully. A sold listing isn't a completed sale, and a preorder resold before it ships is a promise rather than a phone. But they do show what frustrated buyers will pay to skip the line, and right now that premium is about the price of a whole second iPhone.

## If you didn't get one this morning

The shipping estimate is the worst case, not the only path. Apple usually holds some stock for walk-in customers, and iPhone Duo goes on sale in Apple Stores on Friday, October 23\. Expect very little of it, and expect lines. Apple's online store also says to check back Saturday, October 24, for in-store pickup reservations, which is the best shot most people have at a Duo before January without paying a reseller.

If you ordered and got a January date, keep the order. Your place in line only moves backward if you cancel, and estimates on constrained Apple launches tend to improve as production ramps. Paying an eBay markup of up to $1,800 for a phone you would otherwise have in about 14 weeks is a bad trade.

🚫

****Don't buy a Duo from a scalper.**
If a reseller's own order slips to January or gets cancelled, you're the one chasing a refund. Carrier and financed phones can be locked later if the original buyer stops paying, and Apple's 14 day return window only helps the person who bought it from Apple. If you buy secondhand anyway, pay through eBay's own checkout so its Money Back Guarantee covers you, and never pay by Zelle, wire transfer or gift card.

And if the wait has you reconsidering, ask whether you wanted the fold or just a new iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is available now with the same chip, a stronger camera and longer battery life, for $700 less. We laid out exactly what that $700 buys in our [iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/iphone-duo-vs-iphone-18-pro-max/), and what a folding screen costs to fix in our [repair cost breakdown](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/iphone-duo-repair-costs-applecare/).

## What happens next

The real test isn't today. It's what the ship date does over the next three weeks. If January 25 holds while Apple ramps up, demand is genuinely outrunning supply, and Counterpoint Research's forecast of roughly 6 million Duos this year starts to look conservative. If dates pull into December quickly, the first batch was simply small, and today's sellout was a supply story wearing a demand story's clothes.

Either way, Apple got what a first generation product needs most: proof that people will line up to pay $2,000 for an iPhone that folds. The harder part starts when enough of them exist for everyone who wants one to find out whether it was worth the wait.
