If you turned on Siri AI in iOS 27 and want the old Siri back, Apple lets you switch. Go to Settings > Siri, tap Turn Off Siri, confirm, then tap Turn On Siri and choose Use Siri Classic.

Siri AI is the conversational version of Siri that Apple built on Apple Intelligence, and it still carries a Beta label. Owners have asked how to get the previous version back since iOS 27 arrived on Monday, September 14, including in a MacRumors forum thread titled "Back to classic Siri." Apple documents the switch in its iPhone User Guide, but the option only shows up after you turn Siri off, so it is easy to miss.

## What Siri Classic is, and where Apple put the option

Siri Classic is Apple's name for the version of Siri that came before Siri AI. You only have a choice between the two if your iPhone can run Siri AI in the first place. Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air and any iPhone 16 model or later, with the device and Siri language set to a supported language (English to start). Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS. On any other iPhone, you never had Siri AI, and none of the steps below apply to you.

The instructions route the choice through the Turn On Siri screen. So the first step is to turn Siri off completely, which feels backwards when all you want is to change versions.

Usage limits are part of the decision too. Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server side models, Siri AI included, are subject to daily usage limits that "may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors," according to Apple's guide. The same note says expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future. There's no date or price yet.

## How to switch from Siri AI to Siri Classic

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Siri.
3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Turn Off Siri.
4. Tap Turn Off Siri again to confirm.
5. Tap Turn On Siri.
6. Tap Use Siri Classic.

One of Apple's guide pages calls that last button Use Siri Classic and another calls it Siri Classic, so look for either.

To try Siri AI again later, go to Settings > Siri, tap Try Siri AI (Beta), and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple's support article on getting Siri AI describes a waitlist with wait times that vary, after which Siri AI downloads automatically. The article doesn't say whether switching back puts you on that waitlist again, so keep it in mind before you switch.

## What changes when you switch

You'll notice the switch first in how you call Siri. Apple's guide lists four ways to activate Siri that work only with Siri AI: swiping down at the Dynamic Island, choosing Ask Siri after you touch and hold something on screen, Siri mode in the Camera app (or clicking and holding the Camera Control), and asking about a screenshot. With Siri Classic, the ways to call Siri include saying "Siri" or "Hey Siri," pressing and holding the side button (or the Home button on an iPhone that has one), or using the button on EarPods or AirPods.

You also give up the features Apple describes as part of Siri AI. That includes personal context across apps like Mail, Messages and Calendar, onscreen awareness, Write with Siri, and the Siri app, which Apple says brings all your conversations in one place. On iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Siri Expressive Voices also require Siri AI.

For Notification Center, the iOS 27 guide says to swipe down from the top left corner on any screen other than the Lock Screen. If the gesture you've been fighting is the swipe at the top of the screen, our [iOS 27 gesture map](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/ios-27-changed-how-you-open-notifications-here-is-the-new-gesture-map/) lays out what each part of the top edge does.

Siri Classic won't get you offline use either. The iOS 27 guide says, "You must be connected to the internet to use Siri."

## Turning off Siri AI leaves the rest of Apple Intelligence on

On Apple's page for turning off Apple Intelligence features, Siri AI is one entry among many. Summaries, priority notifications and the rest each have their own setting, so switching Siri versions leaves them as they were. These are the paths Apple gives in Settings:

- Messages summaries: Apps > Messages, then turn off Summarize Messages.
- Email summaries: Apps > Mail, then turn off Summarize Message Previews.
- Notification summaries: Notifications > Summarize Notifications, then turn off Summarize Notifications.
- Priority notifications: Notifications > Prioritize Notifications, then turn off Prioritize Notifications.
- Smart replies in Mail: Apps > Mail > Personalize Smart Replies.
- Voicemail suggestions: Apps > Phone > Suggestions in Voicemail.

To block these features instead of switching them off one by one, Apple points to Screen Time, which can restrict Siri and Apple Intelligence features for you or for a child's iPhone.

## If Siri still isn't behaving

When Siri doesn't respond after the switch, Apple's article [If Siri isn't working on your iPhone or iPad](https://support.apple.com/en-us/105037?ref=techbetweenthelines.com) covers the basics: check your internet connection, make sure Siri is turned on in Settings > Siri, and in Settings > Siri > Requests, turn "Siri" or "Hey Siri" off and back on. It also suggests typing to Siri or using a button press if it doesn't respond to your voice.

Trouble that started right after you installed iOS 27 may just mean the phone is still finishing its background work. Our explainer on [the "Optimizing Search and Siri" banner](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/ios-27s-indexing-in-progress-explained-why-its-happening-and-how-long-it-takes/) covers what that looks like. For anything that looks like a real bug, our [iOS 27 problems and fixes page](https://www.techbetweenthelines.com/ios-27-problems-and-fixes/) tracks what Apple has confirmed and fixed.

## Where this goes next

Siri AI still carries the Beta label, and Apple hasn't said when paid expanded access will arrive or what it will cost. Those two answers will shape which Siri is worth keeping, and the switch runs through the same Settings screen in both directions.
