If I'm a free subscriber, do I lose access to the newsletter?
No. Every issue still lands in your inbox in full, free, every week. What changes is what happens after. Once an issue moves to the archive, free subscribers can't pull it back up on the site, link it to someone, or revisit it later. Members can, anytime.
Why should I pay if the news itself is free?
Because the news isn't really the point. Anyone can tell you what Apple announced. What we're after is why they made that call, what tradeoffs they weighed, and what it means for where things go next. That kind of work takes time that a same-day headline doesn't, and membership is what makes it sustainable.
