The cheapest out of warranty repair Apple lists for the iPhone Duo costs $49, and it is for a part no other iPhone has. The most expensive costs $1,499. In between sits the number that should shape your preorder on Friday: $999 to replace the folding inner display if you crack it without AppleCare+.

Apple has published its iPhone Duo service fees ahead of preorders, which open at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16. They are the clearest picture yet of what the first folding iPhone costs after checkout, and they turn AppleCare+ from a reflexive upsell into a decision with real math behind it. Here is the full list, what the new cover layer is, and how to decide on coverage before you tap buy.

    Apple's iPhone Duo repair prices

These are Apple's U.S. estimates from its iPhone service and repair page, with and without AppleCare+.

Apple notes that its estimates cover service from Apple, may be subject to tax, and that the final fee is set when Apple inspects the device. Apple Authorized Service Providers set their own out of warranty prices, and a shipping fee can apply if the phone has to be mailed in.

The same price list makes the premium easy to see. An iPhone 18 Pro Max screen repair costs $379, its battery $129, and other damage $899. The Duo's outer display costs exactly the same $379, which makes sense, since it does the job of a normal iPhone screen. Everything that makes the Duo a Duo costs more: the inner display alone is $999, the battery is $100 more, and other damage is $600 more. If you are still deciding between the two phones, our iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max guide covers the rest of the trade.

What the cover layer is, and why it costs $49

The newest line on the list is "cover layer damage." Apple's VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, explained in an interview reported by MacRumors that the Duo's inner display sits under a nano-texture cover layer that helps hide the crease, and that the layer is "actually replaceable." Apple said it engineered the layer to last, but that it can be replaced if it wears down or the crease becomes more visible.

Apple's price list now puts a number on that promise: $49 without AppleCare+, or $19 with it. That is a meaningful design choice. The most delicate surface on a folding phone, the one your fingers touch every time you open it, is treated as a replaceable layer instead of a $999 screen repair. Bergeron said you can "peel off that layer and get a new one," but Apple has not said whether that means doing it yourself, so for now assume it is a service visit.

    The AppleCare+ math

On the iPhone Duo store page, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year in the U.S. It covers unlimited repairs for accidents like drops and spills, each with a service fee like those in the table above, plus up to two theft or loss claims every 12 months at $149 each. Battery service drops from $229 to $0 when capacity falls below 80 percent.

Run the numbers on a single bad day. Two years of the yearly plan costs $399.98. Add one inner display repair at $99 and you have spent $498.98, about half of the $999 you would pay without coverage. An outer display and back glass repair together costs $509 without AppleCare+, which is already more than two years of the plan. On most iPhones, AppleCare+ is a bet that you will break something. On the Duo, one cracked inner screen settles the bet.

There is an honest case for skipping it: you have gone years without breaking a phone, you keep it in a case, and you would rather self insure the $999. That is a reasonable call on a $1,299 Pro Max. It is a harder one on a $1,999 phone whose most expensive screen is the one that bends.

AppleCare One may be the better buy

Before you add AppleCare+ for the Duo alone, look at AppleCare One. Apple's AppleCare page lists it at $19.99 a month for up to three products, the same monthly price as the Duo's own plan, with each product beyond three adding $5.99 a month, and it can include devices you already own if they are in good condition (Apple may run a diagnostic check first). It adds theft and loss coverage for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, up to three claims a year, and each claim carries a deductible. A Family plan covers up to six people in a Family Sharing group for $49.99 a month.

If you already pay to protect an Apple Watch, an iPad or AirPods, AppleCare One can cover the Duo for little or no extra money. Service fees vary by product, so check the Duo's fees in the plan terms before you switch. Our AppleCare One explainer walks through who comes out ahead. Either way, you do not have to decide at checkout: Apple lets you add a plan in Settings for 60 days after purchase, although adding it at checkout means you are covered from the first day.

Protect the parts that cost the most

A case cannot protect the inner display when the Duo is open, which is what the cover layer is for. It can protect the outer display and back glass, the two repairs that together cost $509, and the hinge edge that takes the hit when a folded phone lands on its side.

Apple is pricing the Duo like a phone it expects people to keep, with a cheap fix for the part most likely to wear and expensive ones for the parts most likely to break. The next things worth watching are how the cover layer holds up after a few months of real use, and whether Apple adds the Duo to its Self Service Repair program. Until then, the price list says it plainly: if you are spending $1,999 on the first folding iPhone, budget for protecting it.
