A small number of iPhone Duo owners say the inner screen cracked along the hinge within hours of setting the phone up. Apple hasn't commented, and nobody knows yet how many phones are affected. If you just got a Duo, here's what has actually been reported, the warning signs to watch for, and what to do if it happens to yours. If it does, a crack from normal use is covered by Apple’s one year warranty, so there’s no need to rush.

What owners are reporting

By Friday night, we can count five reports involving customers' own phones, plus photos of damaged demo units in Apple Stores in China. Many more posts and articles exist, but most of them repeat the same few cases.

  • Australia: the most detailed case. The owner says the inner screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings. He felt something under the display near the hinge, heard a crack, and ended up with a band of bright pixels. The r/iPhoneDuo moderators say they reviewed extra photos and Apple's repair paperwork. An Apple Store replaced the phone on the spot.
  • Dallas: an owner says the hinge turned tight during setup, after about four folds, and the screen cracked with a loud pop when they pushed past the resistance. The owner later updated the post: the Dallas Apple Store replaced the phone right away at no charge, and staff said it was the first one they had seen that day.
  • Another owner: no location given. The screen failed less than seven hours after they bought the phone. They felt a jolt as it reached fully open while it was in a folio case, and say they aren’t sure whether the case played a part. An Apple Store replaced it free after about an hour’s wait.
  • Shanghai: a secondhand report, passed along by a Reddit user, of a customer's phone failing during a normal unfold. The same post says Apple called it user damage. We haven't been able to verify either part.
  • Toronto: a photo of a Duo that broke while a customer was setting it up inside an Apple Store, posted by someone who saw it.

The damage looks similar across the reports: a crack running along the fold, often with a bright line of pixels down one side of the inner screen. Some photographed demo units in China show the same thing, but their history is unknown, and store demo phones get handled hard.

A few reviewers who had early units say they folded theirs heavily without a problem. That's a small sample, and the cause of these failures hasn't been confirmed by Apple or anyone else.

A few owners have also described a hinge that clicks, creaks or feels loose at one end, with no screen damage. One in London says they returned theirs. That isn’t the same failure, and nobody has shown it leads to a crack, but it’s worth having Apple look at it.

Warning signs to watch for

Several of the reports describe something going wrong just before the screen cracked, which gives owners something practical to watch for:

  • The hinge suddenly feels stiff or tight when it moved smoothly before
  • You hear a pop, crunch or grinding sound when opening or closing it
  • You feel a bump or pressure under the inner screen near the fold
  • A bright or colored line appears along the fold
  • The hinge clicks, creaks or feels loose at one end

If you notice any of these, stop opening and closing the phone. Don't push past resistance to see if it frees up. Use the outer screen until someone at Apple has looked at it.

What to do if your Duo cracks or the hinge feels wrong

1. Document it first

Before you go anywhere, take clear photos of the inner screen, the hinge from both sides and all the outer edges and corners. Write down when you got the phone, roughly how many times you'd opened it and exactly what happened. Keep the box and your receipt. If Apple's first answer is that it's accidental damage, a clear record of an undamaged phone failing during normal use is your best argument.

2. Take it to Apple under warranty

A crack from normal use should fall under Apple's one year limited warranty, so there's no deadline beyond that first year if you want to keep the phone. Apple already has an iPhone Duo hinge troubleshooting page covering a hinge that's stiff, loose or noisy. It says there's no software fix for hinge problems, and if cleaning and removing your case don't help, the repair is replacing the inner display assembly, the part that includes the screen.

An Apple Store visit is usually faster than mailing it in. The Australian owner was first offered an express replacement that required a hold for the full price of the phone, and chose to go to a store instead, where it was swapped the same day. The Dallas owner and the owner with the folio case also say an Apple Store replaced their phones the same day at no charge. The only claimed refusal so far is the secondhand Shanghai report.

3. If you'd rather not keep it, use the return window

If this has put you off the Duo, Apple's standard return window gives you 14 days from when you received the phone to return or exchange it, without any discussion about what caused the damage. Bought from a carrier or another retailer? Their return policy applies instead, so check how long you have.

4. If Apple calls it accidental damage

Ask for the decision in writing and ask whether it can be escalated. If it ends up as accidental damage, AppleCare+ makes a big difference on this phone: an inner display repair is $99 with AppleCare+ and $999 without it. You can still add AppleCare+ within 60 days of buying the phone, but it won't cover damage that happened before you added it. Our iPhone Duo repair costs guide has the full price list.

How big is this?

Too early to say. The first Duos reached customers on Thursday and Friday, which means a handful of failures can draw a lot of attention before there's any real sense of the rate. It could fade as more phones arrive without problems, or more reports could turn up as US owners spend a weekend with theirs. MacRumors suggests Apple is likely collecting the failed units to study them, but Apple hasn't said so. Over Friday, the count of customer phone reports went from four to five, while most new coverage kept repeating the same few cases.

We've added this to our iOS 27 problems tracker as a Watching issue. If it happens to your Duo, report it there. Real owner reports are how we keep an honest count, and we'll update this article if Apple comments or the numbers change.

If yours is working fine, nothing here means you need to baby it. Our iPhone Duo setup guide covers the everyday care that helps any foldable, like checking for grit before you close it and leaving the inner screen's cover layer alone.
