Three days after iPhone Duo sold out, some people who ordered one are getting it months sooner than Apple told them. On Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, buyers in Japan started posting order pages that had jumped from November and December delivery to October 23, launch day. One order that showed a December date when it was placed now shows October 23.

Apple hasn't commented on the new dates. One poster on X claimed Apple had confirmed a system error, but Gizmodo's Ray Wong, who flagged the wave of Japanese reports, suspects that came from a store employee rather than the company. What Japan has that other markets don't, and whether it reaches anywhere else before the October 23 launch, is the part worth watching.

What changed for Japanese orders

Preorders opened Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific. Within about half an hour, every configuration on Apple's US store, from the $1,999 256GB model to the $3,199 2TB model, showed the same estimate: January 25. Apple told the Financial Times that demand had been "nothing short of extraordinary" and that it was working to get the phone to customers as quickly as possible.

According to 9to5Mac, the earlier dates are showing up almost entirely in Japan and on orders placed directly with Apple. The reports don't say which configurations are moving, and 9to5Mac notes the new dates could still turn out to be errors that get reversed. AppleInsider adds that some Japanese buyers who ordered on Monday, October 19, say they are also seeing launch day delivery. Outside Japan, Forbes found Apple's UK store still quoting late January.

The one US example is a carrier order. AppleInsider pointed to a T-Mobile customer whose preorder now shows an October 22 ship date. That comes from T-Mobile's own stock, so it says little about orders placed on apple.com.

Japan's Apple Stores now need a reservation

Apple's Japanese retail page now says that, for a while, the latest iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max cannot be bought at an Apple Store without a reservation. The notice does not say how long that lasts.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple shows a similar message in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, where it covers only the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Of the markets he checked, Japan is the one where the Duo is reservation only.

Taken together, the two changes suggest Apple is putting more iPhone Duo stock into Japan, or managing it more tightly there, than in the other markets we can see. Walk in buyers are kept out of the stores while online orders move forward. Apple hasn't said where the extra units came from, and the order pages can't tell us whether this is a new shipment, canceled orders being reassigned, or estimates that started out too cautious.

What to do if you ordered one

Check your order. Open the Apple Store app or Your Orders on apple.com and look at the delivery estimate, since the buyers in Japan spotted their new dates by checking.

Don't cancel and reorder to chase a better date. Outside Japan, new orders are still showing late January, so canceling would put you at the back of that line.

Until the phone actually ships, treat an earlier date as good news that could still change. If Apple decides some of these dates were mistakes, they can move back.

If you didn't order online, don't count on walking in on October 23. In Japan you need a reservation. Elsewhere, Apple hasn't said whether stores will have walk in stock on launch day, and its online store says to check back October 24 for in store pickup. What to watch before October 23

The first iPhone Duos reach customers on Friday, October 23. If US and UK order pages start moving the way Japan's did between now and then, the January 25 estimate was a cautious placeholder and Apple is clearing its backlog early. If they stay put, Japan got an allocation other countries didn't, and late January remains the realistic date for most buyers. We'll update this story if Apple comments or the change spreads.
