TvOS 27, visionOS 27, and HomePod Software 27 Are Out, With Siri AI Landing on Vision Pro

TvOS 27, visionOS 27, and HomePod Software 27 are rolling out today, September 14, alongside the rest of Apple's fall software lineup. These are the three platforms that tend to get the least attention during a launch cycle, and this year is no exception. There's no single feature here carrying the weight Siri AI carries for iPhone, or that Intel's exit carries for Mac. What you get instead is a living room interface that finally looks consistent with the rest of Apple's devices, a Vision Pro update that brings the AI assistant everyone else already has, and a HomePod release that quietly keeps the lights on while a bigger story develops in the background.

None of that means skip this one. If you use an Apple TV daily, the interface changes here are the most visible redesign tvOS has had in years. If you own a Vision Pro, Siri AI is the update that was always going to define this release for you. And if you're a HomePod owner wondering why your speaker feels left out of the conversation again, there's a real answer for that, not just an assumption.

A Liquid Glass Redesign and a Reworked Control Center

tvOS 27 brings the same Liquid Glass design language the rest of Apple's platforms adopted last year, applied here for the first time to the bottom toolbar and app icons across the Home Screen. It's a more polished, more transparent look than tvOS has had before, and it comes paired with a reorganized Control Center that puts commonly used settings within faster reach, along with quicker profile switching for households where multiple people use the same Apple TV.

Podcasts Gets Rebuilt With a Side Menu

The Podcasts app on Apple TV picks up a genuine redesign this cycle, adding a side menu bar for navigation instead of the flatter layout it shipped with before. Apple has also deepened the app's tie to Apple Music, surfacing artist interviews and behind-the-scenes content alongside the shows themselves rather than keeping podcast and music content in separate silos.

Accessibility and Everyday Refinements

Text size options expand this cycle, giving you more room to adjust how large system text renders on a TV screen, which matters more on Apple TV than almost anywhere else in Apple's lineup given how far most people sit from the display. Apple Music on Apple TV also gains support for 24-bit lossless audio, matching the quality tier already available on other platforms.

tvOS 27 supports the Apple TV 4K, 2nd generation and later, dropping the Apple TV HD from 2015 and the original 4K model from 2017 entirely. It's a modest cut compared to what happened elsewhere in this cycle. Siri AI Arrives as a Spatial Orb

Siri AI is the reason this is the most consequential visionOS release since Vision Pro launched. Rather than adapting the same interface iPhone and Mac use, Apple built a purpose-specific version for Vision Pro: a 3D orb you can anchor anywhere in your physical space. Instead of a wake phrase, you glance at the orb and start talking, and it holds genuine back and forth conversations, drawing on both general knowledge and your personal context from Messages, Mail, and Photos the same way Siri AI does everywhere else.

Visual Intelligence extends this to whatever you're looking at, letting you ask questions about real-world objects or onscreen content and get answers grounded in what Siri can actually see through the headset's cameras. Conversations sync through the same Siri app and iCloud history as iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so something you asked on your Mac earlier is available to continue on Vision Pro later.

Vision Pro is notable for being one of only two Apple platforms getting Siri AI in the European Union at launch, alongside Mac. iPhone and iPad remain excluded there for now.

Panoramas Become Environments, and Windows Curve

You can now turn a panorama you've shot into a full spatial Environment, letting a photo you captured become the immersive backdrop around you rather than something you just look at flat. Alongside that, app windows can now curve to wrap around your space more naturally, similar to sitting in front of a curved monitor rather than a flat one. Safari, Freeform, and Apple TV's Multiview feature are among the first apps supporting the curved window format.

A Redesigned Control Center and Faster Wi-Fi

Control Center on visionOS reorganizes into three distinct sections: notifications and media playback, core system controls, and Environments, making it faster to jump to whichever category you actually need instead of scanning one long list. Separately, Apple says Vision Pro can connect to Wi-Fi up to three times faster in certain scenarios, which should show up as quicker downloads and less buffering during streaming.

Two features are locked to the newer M5 Vision Pro specifically: Siri voice customization and some of the more demanding on-device processing. If you own the original M2 Vision Pro, you get the full Siri AI experience, Visual Intelligence, the persistent orb, and conversation history, just not those two extras.

Both Vision Pro models remain supported here, the original M2 version and the newer M5 refresh, which isn't a particularly high bar given Apple has only ever shipped two. Apple Intelligence requires the M2 model at minimum, while voice customization specifically requires M5. It's a free update available now in Settings, then General, then Software Update.

AutoMix Comes to HomePod

The clearest new feature HomePod owners actually get this cycle is AutoMix, Apple Music's AI-powered feature that blends transitions between songs by matching key and tempo rather than relying on a simple crossfade. Apple says it's also improved AutoMix's underlying algorithms generally, adding new transition types that should benefit the feature everywhere it's already available, not just on HomePod. AutoMix requires both iOS 27 and HomePod Software 27 to work.

What's Not Here Yet

If you were hoping your HomePod would pick up its own version of Siri AI this cycle, it doesn't. The conversational, Apple Intelligence-powered Siri arriving on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro isn't part of HomePod Software 27, and reporting ahead of this release consistently pointed to current HomePod hardware simply not being built for it. Your HomePod keeps working exactly as it always has for music, smart home control, and standard Siri requests, it just isn't getting the bigger assistant upgrade this time.

Worth flagging as a rumor rather than a feature: code references discovered in recent betas point toward a four-speaker surround sound configuration and something referred to internally as Party Mode, both apparently built around arranging multiple 2nd generation HomePod units together. None of that is enabled in the shipping software, and neither HomeKit nor the Home app currently recognizes a four-speaker setup even where the underlying groundwork exists. Treat it as a sign of what Apple's building toward, not something you can use today.

HomePod Software 27 Availability

Every HomePod model gets this update without exception, including the original HomePod from 2018, still running the same A8 chip that powered the iPhone 6. It's the one platform in this entire release cycle that saw no compatibility cuts at all. HomePod Software 27 installs automatically or through the Home app's Updates section, the same remote update path tvOS now shares.

Between Siri AI's arrival on Vision Pro and a Liquid Glass Apple TV, this is a quieter release than the other two pieces in this series, but it closes out Apple's fall cycle across every screen and speaker in the lineup.
