#013: Apple's New Home Runs Through Your iPhone
Apple finally gave the home a screen, a voice and a front door. The footnotes tie nearly all of it to an Apple Intelligence iPhone and warn that Siri AI's daily limits will one day come with a fee for more.
Apple finally gave the home a screen, a voice and a front door. The footnotes tie nearly all of it to an Apple Intelligence iPhone and warn that Siri AI's daily limits will one day come with a fee for more.
This week in 30 seconds The news: Apple launched HomeView ($299), HomePod mini 2 ($149), a $299 Apple TV 4K and a line of Home Collection cameras, locks and thermostats. The catch: Siri AI on the new devices leans on an Apple Intelligence iPhone, and Apple says expanded access will cost a fee in the future. Your move: Before you spend $299, open Settings, General, About on your Apple TV. If the model reads A2169, A2737 or A2843, Siri AI is coming to the box you already own in tvOS 27.2. |
Welcome back to The Cupertino Chronicles.
Apple finally gave the home a screen, a voice and a front door this week. Read the footnotes and you find out who actually runs the house: your iPhone.
On Tuesday, with four press releases and no keynote, Apple announced HomeView, a $299 seven inch display, alongside a $149 HomePod mini 2, a new $299 Apple TV 4K and Home Collection, a lineup of LG and Schneider Electric cameras, locks and thermostats starting at $39.95. Every release leads with Siri AI. Nearly every useful feature routes back through an iPhone.
Siri AI on the new Apple TV requires the owner of the home to have an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone or iPad. HomeView can't even be set up without a compatible iPhone or iPad. Personal requests on HomeView and Apple TV need a paired Apple Intelligence device. Home Collection pairs with a tap of an iPhone. Apple's home isn't a separate platform anymore. It is a set of rooms where your phone's intelligence borrows a speaker and a screen.
Then there's the sentence Apple attached to both the HomeView and Apple TV releases: certain features that rely on server side models are subject to daily usage limits, and expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. Apple first published similar language for Siri AI in September. On a $299 kitchen display that up to six people share, it reads differently. A shared screen is the device most likely to find the limit, and the household finds it together.
HomeView ships November 13, and the first reports of families hitting that limit won't be far behind. The sharper signal comes sooner. On November 2, John Ternus hosts his first earnings call as CEO, and Services is where a Siri AI fee would eventually show up.
What Apple now charges for Apple TV 4K, sold in a single 128GB configuration with Ethernet and Thread. In 2022 the equivalent 128GB Wi Fi plus Ethernet model launched at $149. Apple doubled the price of the box in the same week it promised Siri AI to every Apple TV 4K back to the 2021 model, which tells you the extra $150 buys microphones and a better home hub, not the assistant.
Dates to know

Four Products, One Set of Footnotes
The prices and dates fit in one table. The strategy is in the fine print.

Our roundup puts all four announcements in one place, including the dates that split this launch in three: HomePod mini 2 on October 30, HomeView and Apple TV 4K on November 13, and Home Collection from December, with some pieces slipping to early 2027. It also maps where none of this ships, starting with the entire European Union for HomeView, and which speakers already in your home Apple's Siri AI releases never mention at all. If you own an original HomePod mini, start there.
Confession time
One tap to vote. Results in next week's issue.
Be honest: how much of your home runs on Apple Home today?
Apple's Home Collection indoor camera costs $199.95 and doesn't arrive until December. eufy's Indoor Cam E30 works with HomeKit Secure Video today: it pans a full 360 degrees and follows motion, records 4K to a microSD card, and sends encrypted clips to the Home app through the same iCloud+ plan Apple's new cameras will lean on.

The Fine Print "No separate camera subscription" has a footnote. Apple's Home Collection cameras keep 10 days of event history in iCloud+ with no extra camera plan. Footnote 2 sets the real limit: the 50GB iCloud+ plan supports one camera, 200GB supports up to five, and only 2TB is unlimited. Add a second camera and you're shopping for a bigger iCloud plan. No new subscription, just a more expensive version of the one you already pay for. Every week, one line Apple would rather you skimmed. |
Apple Picked Your Front Door
A $249.95 LG doorbell and a $349.95 LG lock that behave like one product, sold by Apple.
Home Collection is Apple deciding it doesn't have to build the accessories to own the experience. Our breakdown covers all nine products and prices, what one tap NFC setup and automatic Thread credential updates actually remove from the usual smart home chores, and what an Apple front door costs once the doorbell and lock land in the same cart. The front door pairing is the most thoughtful thing Apple announced Tuesday. It is also the most expensive way to find out whether curation beats choice.
Your Old Apple TV Just Got Cheaper to Keep
Siri AI is coming in beta to every Apple TV 4K from the 2021 model on, in tvOS 27.2.
That one footnote changes the upgrade math more than the A19 does. Our piece walks through what $299 actually buys over the box you already own: a dedicated AV1 decoder, Wi Fi 7, three far field microphones and the only route into Apple's new four HomePod surround setup. Some of that matters a lot to a few people. Whether it matters to you comes down to a model number most owners have never looked up.
Duo Preorders Open Friday, With a $999 Warning Label: iPhone Duo preorders start October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific ahead of an October 23 launch, and Apple has already posted the repair bill: $999 to replace a cracked inner display without AppleCare+, $99 with it. On a $1,999 phone, that one line turns AppleCare+ from an upsell into arithmetic. Full story →
Beta 4 Takes the New Health App Back: The fourth iOS 27.2 beta, out October 13, removes the redesigned Health app preview exactly as Apple's beta 1 notes promised, and gives Apple Music a new icon. Apple showed that redesign on stage in September, and pulling it now means it won't arrive with the release most iPhones get next. Full story →
Full Disk Access Is Getting New Controls: Apple told developers on October 2 that it will add new controls to Full Disk Access, the Mac setting that lets an app read nearly everything on your drive, without saying when. The switch was built for backup apps, and AI agents that want to read your Messages are why Apple is finally redrawing it. Full story →
No Man's Sky Lands on iPhone October 28: Hello Games is bringing the full game to iPhone and iPad, free to try with a one time $19.99 unlock, on devices as old as the iPhone 11. A decade of console updates arriving whole on a 2019 phone makes a better case for iPhone gaming than most Apple Arcade launches. Full story →
👁 One Thing Worth Watching
HomeView Skips Europe Entirely: Apple says HomeView won't be sold in the European Union because Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS there, and that it is working with the EU on a path forward. Apple has held back features in Europe before. Holding back a whole product is a different signal. Watch what happens to the next Apple device built around Siri AI, because every one of them now carries a European question.
📌 On the record: Apple won't put a price on expanded Siri AI access during the November 2 earnings call. I'll score this, and every call like it, in a quarterly Called It / Missed It.
In Issue #011, we argued that owning the whole widget costs extra. This week the widget became the whole house, and the bill came with it.

Closing Thought
For a decade Apple's smart home pitch was privacy and polish, and the price of entry was a $99 speaker. The new pitch is intelligence, and intelligence costs money to run, which is why it now arrives with an iPhone requirement and a daily limit. Apple has turned the home from a product line into a place for its AI to live, and the meter is the most honest line in the whole announcement.
If Siri AI on a shared family HomeView came with a monthly fee, what's the most you'd pay before going back to setting kitchen timers by hand?
Hit reply and tell me. I read every one, and the sharpest answers (first name only, with your OK) run in next week's issue.
